This program aims to empower young single mothers, who often raise their children without sufficient family and financial supports, to enable them to posses self-confidence and participate in society as responsible citizens. They will attain business skills through the program and become economically independent for their families.
Challenge
A handful of our communities consist of low income generating members a number of which are uneducated. Poverty is on the increase due to the high levels of illiteracy. Teenage pregnancy is on the increase as an outcome. Many of these young mothers are abandoned to take care of themselves thus they drop out of school and upon giving birth, are unable to return as they have to take care of their young ones by themselves. As they lack the skills needed to make ends meet, a number of them resort to prostitution for a living.
Solution
These young mothers will be trained in entrepreneurial skills to become self sustained. The teen mothers from these communities along with handicapped women will be given skills in local fabric dying, sewing, and local jewelries making. They will also be given formal educational lessons for those wanting to improve their literacy or return to school. The young mothers will also be given basic business skills to become economically independent.
